WORCESTER -- A two-goal effort from Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, CT) helped the WPI field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Fitchburg State Tuesday afternoon.
The goals marked the third and fourth of the season for Dutson, who also recorded the first penalty stroke goal of her young career to help improve her team's record to 3-1 to start the season. With the loss Fitchburg State falls to 1-4 on the year.
The game was also the second multi-goal effort of Dutson's career, and the third-straight game that an Engineer has had a multi-goal outing (Dishong, Dutson).
Dutson got the scoring going in the ninth minute of action. After inserting the Engineers' first penalty corner attempt of the afternoon, Samantha Robison (Wrentham, MA) took the initial shot on goal saved by State defender Hannah Walters (Danielson, CT). Dutson scooped up the rebound and sent it back for the 1-0 advantage.
The Falcons got their first shot on goal to come in the third quarter of play, a save by WPI netminder Nini Acquista (Longmeadow, MA), but in the fourth quarter, Dutson put the game out of reach capitalizing on the penalty stroke, beating Fitchburg State goalie Colleen Lamprey (Cherry Valley, MA) to the top left of the net to seal the victory for the Engineers.
The Falcons finished with three shots, one on goal on the day, while WPI dominated the offense finishing with 14 shots on the day and nine on goal. Lamprey ended the day with seven saves. The Engineers also dominated in penalty corner attempts (10-2). WPI has attempted 38 penalty corners, in four games, already this season. Second-most in the NEWMAC.
The Engineers will be back in action Thursday, Sept. 16 when they head back out on the road for a 7pm contest at Bridgewater State, while Fitchburg State will return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 18 against Salem State at 11am.
