Wellesley Slips Past Field Hockey 1-0 in Battle of NEWMAC Unbeatens

2021 WPI Field Hockey

Wellesley, MA --- Cass Novello (Scotch Plains, NJ) notched the only goal of game late in the third period to propel host Wellesley to a 1-0 victory over visiting WPI in a match-up of field hockey teams that entered Saturday morning undefeated in NEWMAC play.

With the triumph, the Blue improves to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in conference action while the Engineers fall to 7-3 on the season and 2-1 against NEWMAC foes.

After a scoreless first half, the hosts attempted the only four shots of the fourth quarter and were rewarded when Novello netted her first collegiate goal when she knocked home a pass from Rose Weseley (New York, NY) at 41:40.

The fourth quarter saw WPI go on the offensive, taking five of the stanza's seven shots.  The Crimson and Gray got a player past the Wellesley defense with under 15 seconds in regulation and were rewarded with a pair of penalty corners in the waning seconds but were unable to tally the equalizer.

Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, CT) led WPI with three shots while Samantha Robison (Wrentham, MA), Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) and Lauren Dishong (Milford, NH) also attempted multiple shots.

The two teams were evenly matched, both attempting 10 shots on the day while WPI held a 7-3 bulge in penalty corners.

Kyra Deehr-Lewis (Newtown, PA) made five stops in net to earn the win for Wellesley while Nini Acquista (Longmeadow, MA) was credited with for save for the Engineers.

WPI meets another undefeated conference opponent on Tuesday, returning to the Wellesley area to face nationally-ranked Babson at 6pm.  Wellesley steps out of conference play on Wednesday, entertaining Nichols at 7pm.
