WORCESTER -- In a hard fought battle that saw MIT tally three fourth quarter goals, the WPI field hockey team fell 4-1 Saturday in a battle of the Engineers.
Senior Anne Davis (Sandwich, MA), was the lone goal scorer of the game for WPI as she was also recognized prior to the game, when WPI honored its seniors who played in the final game of the regular season. Honored today were seniors Davis, Lauren Dishong (Milford, NH), Zoe Januszewski (Vetura, CA), Kelly Makechnie (Hampton Falls, NH), Natalie Mohn (Huntington, VT), and Kelsey Wilkinson (Wilbraham, MA).
WPI (10-6, 4-4 NEWMAC) got on the board first in the second quarter when Emily Sollecito (Bedford, MA) sent a pass up the field to an awaiting Abigail Rauch (Jackson, NJ) who backhanded a shot just outside of the circle that kicked off of MIT goalie Juliana Strother (Mequon, WI) where the senior Davis whipped the rebound into the net for the 1-0 advantage.
MIT (12-4, 7-1) evened the score at one-all just before the conclusion of the first half. Utilizing a penalty corner, its first of the game, Faith Choe (San Diego, CA) ripped a shot from the top left of the circle after a pass from Lucy Kitch-Peck (Bethlehem, PA), who stick stopped the insert, to get the Engineers on the board and send the game to halftime all square at one.
MIT was able to add another one to the total in the start of the fourth quarter when Erica Radler (Wayne, NJ) snuck one past Nini Acquista (Longmeadow, MA). After a scrum of bodies formed outside of the goal, Radler took a pass from Paige Forester (Glencoe, IL) and quickly weaved it through traffic for the score and her 10th goal of the season.
Radler was back at it just over a minute later adding an insurance goal to the total, this time with some help from Jordan Dattero (East Setauket, NY) to make it a 3-1 game, and then after a barrage of shots (and saves from Acquista), MIT added another before the final buzzer when Helen Liu (Short Hills, NJ) put back a rebound to make it a 4-1.
MIT dominated the shot total on the day taking 24 to WPI's six with 15 of those coming on goal. Acquista was busy in net making 10 saves on the afternoon. Strother started the game for MIT playing the first half making two saves and allowing a goal, while Jordan Tierney (St. Louis, MO) saw action in the second half.
Both of the Engineers are back in action in the NEWMAC Championship First, on Nov. 2, WPI will be in action as the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 Wheaton on the road at a time to be announced. MIT finished as the No. 2 seed and has a Quarterfinal Round bye, but will await the winner of the No. 3 Wellesley/No. 6 Mount Holyoke Quarterfinal Round game on Nov. 4.
