Mohn Registers Late Goal as Field Hockey Falls to Roger Williams in 2022 Debut

Natalie Mohn Goal Celebration - WPI Field Hockey 2022

WORCESTER -- Morgan Foley (Hanover, MA) and Hannah Timbrouck (Kinston, NY) each registered goals to propel visiting Roger Williams to a 2-1 season-opening non-conference victory over WPI on H.Carr Field at Alumni Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

After a statistically uneventful first quarter, the Hawks opened the scoring midway through the second stanza. Sara Carney (Franklin, MA) launched a shot which was repelled by WPI netminder Nini Acquista (Longmeadow, MA) only to see Foley knock in her first goal of the season at 23:51.  The Hawks doubled their advantage when Hunter Phillips (Schuylerville, NY) threaded a nifty pass to Timbrouck, who found herself one-on-one with the goalie and slid it into the right side at 38:51.

The Engineers fought back feverishly, taking advantage of playing a player up after a RWU green card late in the third. The Engineers were quickly awarded a penalty corner and seeing Eve Martineau (Greene, ME) and Lauren Dishong (Milford, NH) combine to rattle off three shots in 10 seconds, only to see one block and two saves by Roger Williams goalkeeper Jill Haudenshield (Sykesville, MD).

WPI continued to fight through the fourth quarter, registering all four of the framed shots, finally breaking through when graduate student Natalie Mohn (Huntington, VT) netted her first marker since 2018 with a laser from the middle of the circle that found the backboard in the wanning seconds.

Haudenshield recorded four saves en route to earning the victory in net while Acquista was credited with five stops for the Crimson and Gray.

For the game, WPI enjoyed a 10-8 edge in shots and were awarded five of the game's six corners.

Both teams return to action on Saturday with 1pm road tilts in Western Massachusetts.  WPI heads to Springfield to tangle with Western New England while Roger Williams venture to South Hadley to square off with Mount Holyoke.
