Springfield, MA --- WPI field hockey dropped a non-conference contest 1-0 at Western New England due to the help of the Golden Bears goalkeeper Zoey Wexler (Manchester, CT) who boasted 10 saves on the afternoon.

The Engineers fall to 0-2 as the hosting Golden Bears won its season debut at home to stand at 1-0.

WPI started the tilt with an advantage as the Engineers compiled four penalty corner opportunities that led to shots from Samantha Robison (Wrentham, MA), Eve Martineau (Greene, ME), Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, CT), and Lauren Coutu (Baldwinville, MA) that were unable to find the back of the goal despite a shot knocking off the post.

WNE switched gears by earning two penalty corners and an Emily Campbell (Goffstown, NH) goal put the Golden Bears on top in the second frame. WPI attempted to even the count late in the second quarter with a Lauren Dishong (Milford, NH) shot on goal and a strike by Robison that was blocked to keep the host ahead 1-0 at the intermission.

The second half of action featured nonstop shots as WPI doubled WNE in strikes (10-5) and held the host to zero shots in the final quarter of play. Dishong, Martineau, Shannon Miranda (Winchester, MA), Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA), Dutson, and Rachel Drasser (Lunenburg, MA) all took final strikes as Wexler shut down every opportunity to earn the 1-0 victory and her fourth-career shutout.

In between the pipes for WPI, senior Nini Acquista (Longmeadow, MA) posted five saves on the day.

Both teams will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 7 pm as the Engineers are set to host Wesleyan and the Golden Bears will travel to Wheaton (MA).
