Powers Posts Hat Trick as Field Hockey Kicks off NEWMAC Slate with Shutout of Springfield

Abbey Powers - WPI Field Hockey 2022

Springfield, MA --- Abbey Powers (Halifax, MA) tallied her first career hat trick to lift the WPI field hockey to a 4-0 victory against host Springfield Saturday in the NEWMAC opener for both quads.  The win boosted the Engineers record to 3-4, 1-0 in conference play while the Pride fell to 2-3, 0-1.

The Crimson and Gray controlled much of the play in the first half, holding a 7-1 edge in shots and a 4-1 advantage in penalty corners.  After the Pride held the Engineers off the scoreboard in the first quarter, the visitors broke through with two goals in the final three-plus minutes of the half to go into the break to a 2-0 cushion.  Powers followed up her initial shot that was saved by flipping a bid into the air and over the goal line in the 27th minute before one-timing an Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, CT) centering pass with 35 seconds on the clock to conclude the first-half scoring.

WPI added to its lead in the 39th minute when Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) blistered a centering pass from the end line that Lauren Dishong (Milford, NH) was able to run onto and redirect into the back of the cage. Powers completed her hat trick in the 54th minute as she took a feed and then backed her way towards the cage before flicking a backhanded shot just inside the right post.  The rookie now has three goals on the season and the hat trick was the second for the Engineers as Dutson notched one on Monday versus Fitchburg State.

For the game, WPI owned a 14-2 advantage in shots and took nine of the game's 14 penalty corners.  In goal for WPI,  Nini Acquista (Longmeadow, MA) was credited with the victory and her first shutout of the season and fifth clean sheet of her career.  Savanna Harvey (Cumberland, ME) and Remy Niland (Marshfield, MA) split time in goal for the Pride and combined for three stops.

The Crimson and Gray step out of conference Thursday when they head down Park Ave and across Chandler Street to take on city rival Worcester State at 7pm.  Springfield is back at it Wednesday hosting No.5 Trinity at 6pm.
