Cambridge, MA --- A 47th-minute goal from MIT's Liberty Ladd (Falmouth, ME) sent the #2 Cambridge Engineers to the NEWMAC Tournament Championship with a 1-0 win over #3 WPI on Thursday night.
MIT (15-3), ranked 12th in the nation, plays for the NEWMAC title for the sixth straight season. The Championship game will be contested at #1 Babson on Saturday, November 5.
WPI ends its 2022 campaign with a 12-8 overall record. It marked the fifth straight winning season for the Crimson and Gray, their longest since a stretch of nine consecutive years from 1985-1993.
After three scoreless quarters, Ladd broke the 0-0 tie with her 11th goal of the season. A battle with WPI keeper Nini Acquista (Longmeadow, MA) saw Ladd get her stick on the goal line and send one into the back of the cage at the near post for the 1-0 advantage.
Following the goal, the MIT defense stood firm, not allowing a WPI shot the rest of the way to punch the Engineers' ticket to the NEWMAC title game.
MIT finished with a 22-2 shot advantage, keeping Acquista busy in the cage for the Engineers. A Herculean effort saw the WPI keeper make nine saves on the night.
WPI's best chance to score came midway through the second quarter. An attempt from Lauren Dishong (Milford, NH) was blocked in front of the cage, while a shot from Arie Lang (West Hartford, CT) was saved by MIT's Anna Duncan (St. Louis, MO).
