Westwood, MA – No. 23 WPI men's basketball forwards John Lowther (Hingham, MA) and John Adams (Douglas, MA) were selected as NEWMAC Men's Basketball Offensive and Defensive Athlete of the Week for the week ending on January 9th.
The junior forward kicked off the new year at Springfield with a 19-point performance while bringing down eight rebounds and recording a block. In 32 minutes, Lowther went 9-of-19 from the field while shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc in the 68-52 victory over Springfield to open conference play.
Lowther dropped 18 points this past Saturday in the first home contest since November 13th for the no. 23 Engineers. In 30 minutes of action, the forward shot 9-of-17 against MIT with seven rebounds, two assists, two steals, and three blocks for the Crimson and Gray to earn the conference Offensive Athlete of the Week selection.
Fellow teammate John Adams was named the defensive athlete of the week with his 15-point outing accompanied by 13 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block while WPI held Springfield to 52 points and 30.5 percent from the floor in a 68-52 conference win last Wednesday.
Adams logged 30 minutes of action in the win on Saturday against MIT. The sophomore forward compiled 14 points, 13 rebounds, a trio of assists, and steals as the Crimson and Gray limited MIT to 49 points for back-to-back victories in conference play.
Lowther and Adams' contributions this week led to a 2-0 record for the Engineers in conference play and marked the fifth-consecutive victory to earn No. 23 in the most recent D3hoops.com Men's Basketball Top 25, moving up one spot from the previous ranking.
The Engineers are slated to take on Babson in Harrington Auditorium on Wednesday, Jan. 12th, at 7pm!
