Westwood, MA --- WPI men's basketball junior guard Donovan Sevilla (San Ramon, CA) was selected as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Basketball Offensive Athlete of the Week for the week ending on January 22nd. Emerson's Jarred Houston (Norwood, MA) was selected as the league's Defensive Athlete of the Week.
Sevilla averaged a team-best 19.5 points per game as No. 12 WPI maintained an unblemished mark in conference competition with two wins last week. The San Ramon native erupted for a career-high 25 points and chipped in four assists, four steals and a trio of boards as the Engineers took down crosstown foe Clark 83-75 in the Kneller Athletic Center on Wednesday evening. On Saturday, Sevilla dropped 14 points to help the nationally-ranked Crimson and Gray erase a halftime deficit for the second straight game and log a 78-68 comeback victory against Wheaton in Harrington Auditorium. Sevilla checked in for 74 of 80 possible minutes of action as WPI improved to 6-0 in NEWMAC action.
This week's honor marks back-to-back weeks where a member of the nationally-ranked Crimson and Gray was tabbed as the Offensive Player of the Week and fifth overall during the 2022-2023 campaign. The Engineers are scheduled for a pair of NEWMAC contests starting on Wednesday evening hosting Coast Guard at 7pm in Harrington Auditorium before traveling to Springfield on Saturday for a matchup with the Pride slated for 3pm.
