Worcester, MA --- WPI men's rowing wrapped up its 2014 spring season Sunday at the ECAC National Invitational on Lake Quinsigamond. The varsity eight narrowly missed the grand final while the Engineers saw its second varsity reach its grand while the third varsity rowed to a second place showing in the petite.
The varsity eight of John Morrissey (New Milford, CT), Matt Foley (Pepperell, MA), Kendall Cotton (Harvard, MA), Alex Barat (Franklin Park, NJ), Gary Jackson (Hopedale, MA), Joe Sperry (Northampton, MA), Keegan Cole (Spencer, MA), Nick Van Sciver (Wayland, MA), and coxswain Mitra Marvasti-Sitterly (Glastonbury, CT) placed third in a star-studded heat with a time of 5:58.682. In a race where the top four crews were separated by just three seconds, Michigan came out on top and Bates edged WPI by a tenth of a second for a spot in the grand final. In the afternoon the Crimson and Gray was in another tight race, finishing fourth (6:21.339) but just over three seconds behind petite winner Boston College.
The second varsity eight comprised of Norm Harris (Gilford, NH), Nick Cebry (Bedford, MA), Michael Beinor (Sutton, MA), Matt Deptula (Budd Lake, NJ), Brede Doerner (Branford, CT), Dean Schifilliti (Ossining, NY), Danny Singer (Eldersburg, MD), Jackson Krupnick (Asheville, NC) and coxswain Kelsey Regan (Winchedon, MA) reached the grand final with a time of 6:13.412 in the morning heat. The boat turning in a sixth-place time in the afternoon (6:16.549).
The third varsity eight made up of Zach Gendreau (Galesville, WI), Paul Esteve (Colchester, CT), Keegan Train (Excelsior, MN), Chris Sample (Groveland, MA), Ryan Killea (Hillsborough, CA), Dan Seaman (Claremont, NH), Scott Cazier (Wheat Ridge, CO), Jack Perry (Londonderry, NH) and coxswain Robyn Quartararo (Smithtown, NH) trimmed over five seconds from its heat time, taking second in the afternoon petite final (6:26.785).
The ECAC Invitational marks the conclusion of the 2013-2014 season for WPI. In early July WPI will be competing in the Henley Royal Regatta before beginning the 2014-2015 fall season in late September.
