Men’s Rowing Compete in first New England Rowing Championships Since 2019

WORCESTER -- The New England Rowing Championships returned Saturday to Lake Quinsigamond after a two-year hiatus and the WPI men's rowing program claimed a bronze medal and a win in a petite final to highlight a competitive day of racing. 

The seventh-seeded varsity eight got a tough draw and placed third in its heat, turning in a time of 6:02.563, behind MIT (5:54.840) and Trinity (5:56.393) but ahead of Coast Guard (6:11.580), UMass (6:16.337) and Merrimack (7:27.998).  Afternoon racing saw the Crimson and Gray emerge victorious in the petite finals, reaching the finish line in a time of 6:00.242 to best Bowdoin (6:04.005), Middlebury (6:05.880), Wesleyan (6:10.165), Boston College (6:12.405) and Coast Guard (6:20.682). 

The second varsity eight placed sixth in morning heat with a time of 6:26.850 but improved by nearly eight seconds in the afternoon to reach the final buoy in 6:17.999.  Boston College took the petite final in a time of 6:11.111. 

The Engineers were solid in the second varsity four.  WPI placed second behind Vermont in the morning (7:15.929 to 7:24.434) but quicker than Conn College (7:27.661), MIT (7:29.367) and New Hampshire (7:44.596).  A bronze medal was earned in the grand final as the Crimson and Gray reached the finish line in 7:14.186.  Rhode Island (7:01.133) won gold, and Vermont (7:07.569) silver while Bowdoin (7:14.663) was fourth, Colby (7:22.946) fifth and Conn College (7:35.356) sixth. 

WPI turns its attention to next week's National Invitational Rowing Championships, which is Sunday on Lake Quinsigamond.
