West Windsor, NJ --- Competing in the first-ever Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Division III Championship, WPI men's rowing's varsity eight collected a sixth-place finish in the grand final late Saturday morning on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey.
For the second day in a row the seventh-ranked Engineers were in Lane 6 and jumped out quickly, posting a time of 1:26.130 to again reach the 500-meter buoys in second place. The second quarter of the race saw WPI post a time of 1:31.850 and sit in fifth place midway to the finish. The Crimson and Gray registered nearly identical splits of 1:33.120 and 1:33.907 over the last two 500-meter pieces to place sixth in a time of 6:05.007, nearly 2 1/2 seconds faster than in lane-placement race time a day earlier.
For the second day in a row, top-ranked Williams led from start-to-finish, reaching the finish line in time of 5:47.239, 15 seconds faster than Friday's mark. No. 3 Tufts earned silver with a time of 5:50.571 and was joined on the podium by No. 4 Trinity, which took bronze by clocking a 5:51.075. No. 2 Bates was fourth (5:57.163) followed by No. 5 Hamilton (5:59.225), WPI and No. 8 Washington College (MD) (6:07.895).
Saturday marked the end of the 2021-22 season for the Engineers, who will return to practice in late August and will row in the fall season which includes the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta, the venerable Head of the Charles Regatta and the Wormtown Chase Regatta in October.
