Men’s Rowing Registers Outstanding Start at First-Ever IRA Division 3 National Championship

West Windsor, NJ --- WPI men's rowing varsity eight had a successful debut Friday at the inaugural Division III National Championship being held as part of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship Regatta.  The Engineers finished fourth in the seven-team race on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey that determines placing for Saturday morning's grand final. 

Racing out of Lane 6 on Friday morning, the seventh-ranked Crimson and Gray finished ahead of No. 2 Bates, No. 4 Trinity and No. 8 Washington College.  No. 1 Williams was first followed by No. 3 Tufts and No. 4 Trinity. 

WPI used a quick start of 1:27.270 over the first 500 meters and 1:31.190 over the next 500 meters to sit in second place midway through the face.  The top-ranked Ephs went out in 1:25.630 en route to their wire-to-wire victory.  Tufts made up significant ground over the third 500 meters and was about even with the Engineers at the 1,500 meter mark. 

Williams reached the final buoys in a time of 6:07.409 while the Jumbos (6:04.685) were second.  Trinity used a late surge to edge WPI for third place (6:06.147 to 6:07.409) while Larry Noble's crew nipped Bates (6:07.537) by 0.128 seconds for fourth place.  Hamilton (6:09.817) placed sixth and Washington College (6:12.859) finished seventh. 

Saturday's grand final will begin at 11:40pm.  Chevron lane assignments based on Friday's results place Williams in Lane 4, Tufts in Lane 5, Trinity in Lane 3, WPI in Lane 6, Bates in Lane 2, Hamilton in Lane 7 and Washington College in Lane 1.
