Men’s Rowing Takes Second in Petites at New England’s; Three Others Reach Grand Finals

Varsity Eight - WPI Men's Rowing 2023

WORCESTER -- WPI Men's Rowing competed in the New England Rowing Championships on a sun-soaked Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday and the Engineers saw its varsity eight place second in the petite finals and eighth overall while seeing its three other entries qualify for their respective grand finals.

Using a traditional heat/finals progression, the varsity eight turned in a third place time of 6:02.66 in the morning, trailing Wesleyan (5:53.82) and Division I MIT (5:55.62) but ahead of Boston College (6:07.32), UMass (6:21.69) and Conn College (6:51.72).  In the petite final, the Crimson and Gray (5:58.38) was less that three seconds behind Trinity (5:55.59), but comfortably ahead of Colby (6:02.59), Coast Guard (6:02.79), Boston College (6:03.54) and Rhode Island (6:11.85).  The win over Coast Guard is another feather in WPI's cap in the quest for a spot in next month's IRA Division III Championships.

The other three WPI crews all reached grand finals.  The 2V was remarkably consistent on Saturday, placing third in their morning heat with a time of 6:09.310 and sixth in the grand final, reaching Regatta Point in 6:09.86.  WPI bested Division I MIT by 3 1/2 seconds in its heat to qualify for the grand final.

The 3V trimmed over three seconds off its morning time when they reached the finish line in a time of 6:15.90 to place fifth in the grand final, just about four seconds out of third place.  The Crimson and Gray turned in a time of 6:19.29 for third place showing in the morning.  The 4V only raced in the afternoon grand final, clocking a 6:16.51 to just miss bronze by 0.34 seconds.

WPI is back on the water Friday, competing in the National Invitational Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond.
