
WORCESTER -- WPI men's rowing closed out the Lake Quinsigamond portion of its 2022-23 schedule on Friday, taking part in the National Invitational Rowing Championship held Friday in search of securing its spot in June's IRCA Division III National Championships in New Jersey.
On a day that saw significantly faster times in the afternoon finals than in the morning heats, the varsity eight turned in third-place performances in both its prelim (6:22.180) and petite final (6:01.924). In the morning WPI trailed MIT (6:10.172) and Tufts (6:15.732) and bested Marist (6:25.802), RIT (6:37.054), and Skidmore (6:54.077) while Bates took the petite final in a time of 5:56.288 with Hobart (5:58.696) second, Marist (6:06.317) fourth, Ithaca (6:06.317) fifth and Hamilton (6:06.321) sixth.
The second varsity eight also advanced to its petite final. The Engineers reached the final buoys in 6:27.828 in its heat, quicker than Marist (6:33.328) and Ithaca (6:39.464) but behind Trinity (6:20.042), Michigan (6:26.190), and Hobart (6:26.190). In the afternoon, the Boynton Hillers were second, just over two seconds behind Tufts (6:04.505 to 6:06.881) but ahead of Ithaca (6:08.039), Marist (6:11.133), Hamilton (6:26.602) and RIT (6:35.354).
The third varsity eight reached the grand finals in their final appearance of the season. The Engineers clocked a time of 6:35.792 in the morning heat to finish third before placing sixth in the grand final in a time of 6:12.056. Williams won the grand final by reaching the finish line in 6:00.560.
WPI awaits word on a possible selection to the IRCA Division III National Championships. Participants will be revealed next week with the championship scheduled for Friday, June 2nd, and Saturday, June 3rd, on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey.
