Worcester, MA --- Coast Guard goalkeeper Chris Tarbell (Haddonfield, NJ) stopped a penalty kick en route to posting a shutout as the Bears clinched a NEWMAC Tournament bid Saturday morning with a 2-0 victory over host WPI.

Coast Guard (7-8-1, 2-3-1 NEWMAC) will host Springfield in a NEWMAC quarterfinal on Wednesday.  The Bears earned the fourth seed and Springfield qualified for the five-team tournament when Babson rallied to defeat Clark 3-2 in double overtime later in the afternoon.

With the result, WPI sees its season come to an end with a 5-10-1 overall mark and a 0-5-1 record in NEWMAC play.

Anthony Walker (Kansas City, MO) got the visitors onto the scoreboard in the 17th minute when he took a pass from Brett Godiksen (Westbrook, CT) and sent a low drive into the bottom left corner for his fifth goal of the season.  Senior back Frank Hackett (Marshfield, MA) helped the Bears take a 1-0 advantage into the locker room at the intermission when he made a diving clear of a ball off the line in the 32nd minute.

After a wild scramble in front of the Coast Guard net, the Engineers were awarded a penalty kick early in the 63rd minute but Tarbell was up to the challenge, diving to his left to repel the shot.

Hackett then tacked on an insurance goal for the Bears in the 76th minute as he tucked in a Matt Zangle (Camp Hill) corner kick by the near post for his second marker of the year.

Tarbell collected seven saves for Coast Guard while Paul Moan (Watertown, MA) was saddled with the loss in net for the Engineers.

WPI enjoyed a 14-5 bulge in shots and took all three of the game's corner kicks.  Mike Ford (Whitman, MA) and Kevin Ducharme (Bedford, MA) led the offensive attack for the hosts, each notching three shots.

The game marked the final collegiate contest for seven WPI seniors including Moan, Ford, Kirk Dragsback (Sherborn, MA), Thomas Cucinotta (Easton, MA), Keeon Tabrizi (Harvard, MA), Matthew Wzorek (Southwick, MA) and Chris LaBarre (Southwick, MA).  The Engineers are tentatively slated to begin the 2011 season on Friday, September 2th versus Becker in a Worcester City Tournament game at Anna Maria.
