Men's Soccer Falls on the Road at Regionally-Ranked Babson

Jason Hopkins

Babson Park, MA --- Babson senior captain Max Walker (Newton, MA) and sophomore Mike Fisher (Longmeadow, MA) each scored their third goals of the season as the Beavers picked up a 3-1 victory over visiting WPI in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer match at Hartwell-Rogers Field on Saturday.

With its fifth win in a row, Babson moved to 7-2-1 overall and 2-0-0 in league play, while the Engineers suffered just their second loss of 2011 to fall to 8-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the NEWMAC.

The Beavers took a 1-0 lead on an own goal midway through the first half , beginning when junior All-American Eric Anderson (Scituate, MA) turned the corner and fired a cross through the box from the left end line. A WPI defender made a sliding attempt to knock the ball out of bounds, but the ensuing deflection carried past sophomore goalie Jeff Wong (Millington, NJ) for the first goal of the contest at 21:28.

Babson nearly doubled its lead twice later in the period, but Wong made a pair of outstanding diving saves to his right. The first came on a rocket off the foot of junior Jimmy Stento (Needham, MA) at 26:31, and the second came on Anderson's header at 35:37.

WPI tied the score in the opening moments of the second half, as sophomore Chris Ciampa (Danvers, MA) hit a long ball over the Babson defense where it was chased down by junior Jason Hopkins (Mendon, MA). Hopkins then blasted an open shot from the right side into the lower left corner, knotting the game at 1-1 at 54:43. It was the junior's team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The Beavers moved back in front less than 10 minutes later, as first-year Shawn Citro's (Oakland, NJ) long throw-in from the left sideline carried through a crowd in the box. The ball was finally corralled by Walker, who ripped a shot from point-blank range past Wong for the go-ahead goal at 64:11.

Babson made it 3-1 in the 78th minute of play, beginning when Fisher took a shot from the right side of the box that was saved by Wong. The rebound came right back to the Babson sophomore, who ripped a shot that glanced off a defender and settled into the upper left corner for an unassisted tally at 77:24.

That was enough for the Babson defense, which allowed just three shots on goal in the contest. Senior goalie Peter Crowley (Lexington, MA) made two stops in net for the Beavers, including a spectacular tip over the crossbar on a close-range header by senior Kevin Ducharme (Bedford, NH) at 78:27.

Wong turned away seven shots in defeat for WPI, who concludes a three-game road trip on Wednesday at Wentworth at 7pm.
