Chicopee, MA --- A penalty kick goal by WPI's Chris Ciampa (Danvers, MA) with eight minutes to play gave the Engineers a hard-fought 3-2 victory over host Elms in Thursday evening's non-conference men's soccer game at Leary Field.
With the loss, Elms falls to 1-1 overall, while WPI remains undefeated and improves to 3-0 on the season.
After battling back and forth through the first 30 minutes of play, Elms broke the deadlock when sophomore forward Joseph Coleman (Easthampton, MA) delivered a perfectly placed centering pass to freshman midfield Gerard Lawler (Langwarrin, Victoria, Australia) who blasted the ball into the left corner of the net to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.
The Engineers mounted a comeback just before intermission when Connor Bolton (Warwick, RI) lifted a free kick service that was headed into the back of the net by Jason Hopkins (Mendon, MA) to tie the game at 1-1 at the break.
WPI forged ahead late in the second half when Ciampa and Eric Crevoiserat (Glastonbury, CT) orchestrated a perfect feed to Hopkins who was sprinting down the left side of the field and delivered his second goal of the game into the back of the net give Engineers a 2-1 edge.
Two minutes later the Blazers connected for the equalizer as Richard Vanasse (Somers, CT) collected a rebounded shot from sophomore forward Joelle Reyes (San Salvador, El Salvador) and played the ball into the net setting the score at 2-2.
WPI held advantages in shots (14-8) and corner kicks (6-4), and received four saves from goalkeeper Jeff Wong (Millington, NJ).
Elms' starting freshman goalkeeper Christian Kostka (Oxford, CT) notched one save in 45 minutes of action, while sophomore goalie Nicholson Pennant (Kingston, Jamaica) registered three saves in the second half.
Elms returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 8 when it travels to Lyndon State for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference contest. WPI heads to Framingham State for a 10am match that same day.
