New London, MA --- Coast Guard scored two second half goals to post a NEWMAC conference victory over visiting WPI. With the win the Bears improve to 4-3 on the season, 2-0 in the conference. WPI drops to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC.
Coast Guard enjoyed the better of the play in the first half, outshooting WPI 11-6 and having four corner kicks to their three. WPI keeper Jeff Wong (Millington, NJ) make a great save on junior midfielder John Rendon (West Harwich, MA)at the near post and Coast Guard misfired on a handful of other quality chances. At the other end, Coast Guard keeper Richie Burns (Long Beach, CA) made an excellent stop midway through the first half as well.
The Bears secured most of the possession in the early stages of the second half. Their pressure paid off when freshman forward Ricky Davies (Richardson, TX) scored the first goal of the game and of his career in the 66th minute. Sophomore defender Jonathon Ray (Huntsville, AL) scurried down the left sideline and played a ball across the box which fell to Davies 15 yards out. His strike took a deflection and nestled on the bottom corner.
Shortly after the goal, Burns made the save of the match tipping a header by a WPI attacker over the bar in acrobatic fashion.
The Bears sealed the game in the 86th minute when freshman forward Lukas Benedetto (Ronkonkoma, NY) made run behind the defense. His pressure on Wong forced a clearance which struck a WPI defender. The deflection made its way into the WPI goal, putting Coast Guard up 2-0.
The Bears outshot the Engineers 19-10, while Burns made 4 saves in the shutout victory. Wong made 4 saves in the loss.
Coast Guard returns to action on Tuesday, September 25, when they host Massachusetts Maritime. The Engineers return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 26, when they will be home against Salve Regina.
