Lightning Strikes Again as Harmony Keys Men's Soccer Win Over Elms

Zach Harmony

Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Zach Harmony (Dayton, OH) broke a 1-1 deadlock in the 64th minute to propel host WPI to a 2-1 non-conference men's soccer win over Elms on Thursday night at Alumni Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-2-1 while the Blazers slip to 4-6.

Harmony headed home a throw-in by sophomore Chris Murray (Canton, MA) for what proved to be the game-winning marker at 63:43. WPI outshot Elms 14-3 in the second half and took five of the eight corner kicks in the frame.

Like the one half played on September 12, before lightning forced the two teams to abandon the match, WPI and Elms played to a 1-1 draw after the first 45 minutes. Engineer seniorChris Ciampa (Danvers, MA) looked to light up the scoreboard early but his bid rang off the right post just 1:30 into the restarted match. He redeemed himself with a penalty kick tally at the 3:58 mark for his 10th of the year and fourth via PKs.   The senior now has 33 career goals and eclipses the 75 point milestone.

Neither netminder was tested again until the 30th minute when WPI senior Jeff Wong(Millington, NJ) scooped up a shot by junior Joseph Coleman (Easthampton, MA). Coleman then doled out a corner kick to senior Ziggy Jonathan (Burundi, Africa) for the equalizer in the 31st minute. Sophomore Nick Pennant (Kingston, Jamaica) made his lone stop of the half in the 34th minute as senior Ditton Kawalya (Kanbala, Uganda) took a shot from the left side shortly after he entered the game.

Both Wong and Pennant stopped four shots apiece while Coleman registered a team save for the Blazers in the 79th minute.

The Engineers conclude a four-game homestand when the team welcomes Emerson for a 1:30pm NEWMAC match on Saturday. Elms hosts Springfield for a non-conference contest on Sunday at 4pm.
