Worcester, MA --- Junior Justin Laurenzo's (Park Ridge, NJ) early first half goal proved to be the difference as Babson edged WPI, 1-0, in a NEWMAC men's soccer match on Friday night at Alumni Field. With the win, the Beavers move to 10-6-1 on the year and 3-2-1 in conference play while WPI slips to 10-4-1 overall and evens out at 3-3 in league action.

Laurenzo put the visitors on the scoreboard at the 22 minute mark when he deposited his sixth tally of the season off a rebound shot initially taken by sophomore Tyler Carlos (Prospect, CT). WPI looked to level the game 30 seconds later but freshman Matt Farrell's (Groveland, MA) bid was cleared off the line by senior back  Bryan Rust (Granby, CT).

Prior to the marker, Farrell had his shot from the left side scooped up by senior goalkeeper Jackson Klein (Maplewood, NJ) in the ninth minute. Five minutes later junior Eric Crevoiserat (Glastonbury, CT) booted ball off the line from Laurenzo following a corner kick.

The Engineers were awarded a penalty kick at 55:00; however, Klein stopped Ciampa's shot with a diving move to his left. Early in the 57th minute sophomore Kurt Naugler's (Westford, MA) attempt to bury a rebound shot was denied by senior Thomas Elbling (Porto Alegre, Brazil).   The flurry highlighted a frenzy that saw WPI attempt the first eight shots of the second half.

Laurenzo took the first Babson shot of the second half in the 78th minute only to have his header punched the ball away by Wong. Down the stretch, the Beavers had four more shots highlighted by a pair of attempts by sophomore Mario Vicente (Miami, FL) in the 87th minute as he looked to deposit his own rebound.

Klein (10-4-1) halted a game-best eight shots while Wong (10-4-1) stopped five for the hosts. Babson had a slight edge in shots (17-15) as the Beavers held the 12-4 advantage in the first half and WPI taking an 11-5 margin in the second. The guests also took five of the nine corner kicks on the night.

WPI and Babson steps out of conference action on Tuesday for their penultimate match of the regular season. The Engineers head to Mass. Maritime for a 7pm tilt while the Beavers travel to Lasell for a 3pm matinee.
