Worcester, MA --- WPI junior Kurt Naugler (Westford, MA) finished off a feed from classmate Chris Murray (Canton, MA) with 5:23 remaining in the second overtime to lift the Engineers past Mass. Maritime, 2-1, in a non-conference men's soccer contest on Saturday morning at Alumni Stadium.
With the win, the Engineers improved to 5-0 for the first time since 2006 while the Buccaneers leveled out at 2-2.
Naugler narrowly ended the match in the 95th minute; however, his attempt was swatted away by Buccaneer sophomore keeper Joe Cohen (Plymouth, MA) and the ensuing scrum came up empty. Earlier in the contest, Cohen snagged a long boot sent in by Naugler in the 64th minute.
Sophomore Matt Farrell (Groveland, MA) had a great close range opportunity late in the 78th minute but Cohen swatted the ball away. Farrell's follow-up on the rebound went high. Less than two minutes later, rookie Anthony Vigliotta's (Beverly, MA) header was corralled by Cohen. Cohen later smothered a Farrell shot in the 82nd minute.
Senior Tynan MacLeod (Groton, MA) looked to strike early for the Engineers, but his shot went just wide with only 36 seconds expired. Mass. Maritime suffered a similar fate in the fifth minute when junior Connor McInnis' (Duxbury, MA) bid went wide left. Six minutes later, senior co-captain Shane Fagan (Middletown, RI) had his shot stopped by Cohen.
Following a feed from freshman Tim Paz (Baltic, CT), Mass. Maritime junior Nick Parker (Plymouth, MA) slid the ball past the WPI keeper, who was positioned at the top of the box, for his first goal of the season. Prior to the tally, the Engineers had not allowed a goal in 374-plus minutes, including 284-plus for rookie netminder Connor Hoeckele (Granby, CT). Minutes later, Cohen stonewalled a shot by senior co-captain Eric Crevoiserat (Glastonbury, CT) and was tested again moments later by classmate Sam Russell (Glastonbury, CT). Freshman Brendan Nemes (Kingston, MA) looked to level the contest at 41:35 with a laser that went just above the crossbar on a corner kick.
The Boynton Hillers' best chance in the opening frame came as Vigliotta narrowly missed finding the lower right corner of the net with 42 ticks left. Seconds later Vogliotta had his header turned away by Cohen.
After the break, Naugler had his header scooped up by Cohen in the 48th minute before Vigliotta finally broke the plane at 48:46 to even the match and net his first career marker.
Hoeckele was not credited with a save while Cohen finished with a season-best 11 stops.
WPI held commanding margins in shots (25-6) and shots on goal (13-1) in addition to taking all six corner kicks.
Sophomore Thomas McCarthy (Tybee Island, GA), junior Ryan Culp (Centerville, MD), senior Alex Thompson (Mansfield, MA) and senior Dillon Jones (Sagamore Beach, MA) joined McInnis and Parker with one shot apiece.
The Engineers host nationally-ranked Brandeis on Wednesday at 7pm. Mass. Maritime travels to Nichols to face the Bison in a 4pm tilt, also on Wednesday.
