Sam Russell

Boston, MA --- Seniors Sam Russell (Glastonbury, CT) and Tynan MacLeod (Groton, MA) combined for all five goals and contributed three assists as the WPI men's soccer team went on the road and collected a convincing 5-0 NEWMAC victory over Emerson on Saturday afternoon at Rotch Field in Boston.

WPI, ranked ninth in the most recent NSCAA New England Coaches Top 10 poll, improves to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play while Emerson slips to 2-5-3 overall and 0-3 on NEWMAC tilts.

The Engineers wasted no time in denting the scoreboard when MacLeod collected a long throw in from Chris Murray (Canton, MA) and flicked it over the goalkeeper.  Russell added to the advantage less than three minutes later when he took a feed over the top from Brien Hard (New Hartford, CT) and chipped it over the goalie late in the ninth minute.

Leading 2-0 at the half, Russell and MacLeod teamed up for three goals in a span of 12:40 early in the second stanza.  MacLeod finished off a 2-on-1 at 52:08, before Russell buried a cross from the left less than three minutes later.  Russell closed out the scoring at 64:48 when he knocked home a shot after taking a pass from MacLeod.

Connor Hoeckele (Granby, CT) was credited with the win in net for WPI and made a spectacular diving save from point blank range early in the second half.  Chris Xavier (Essex, MA) worked the final 19:17 in net to combine on the shutout.  Carter Bowers (Gorham, ME) made four stops in the opening 56:37 for Emerson while Henri Fischer (Atlanta, GA) registered a save over the last 33:23 for the Lions.
