Nate Peterson

Worcester, MA --- WPI scored a pair of goals less than 10 minutes apart in the second half to turn a 1-0 deficit into an important 2-1 victory over visiting Springfield in a key NEWMAC men's soccer contest on Saturday morning.

WPI, seventh in the most recent NSCAA Division New England Coaches top 10 and receiving votes in the D3soccer.com top 25, ups its record to 11-2 overall and 3-1 in conference action.  Springfield is now 5-4-5 on the season and 1-2-1 in NEWMAC play.

Trailing 1-0 late in the 69th minute, Engineer rookie Brendan Nemes (Kingston, MA) drew a foul in the box to draw a penalty kick.  Senior Eric Crevoiserat (Glastonbury, CT) calmly stepped up and drilled the shot into the lower left corner for his third goal of the season and ninth of his career.

The Crimson and Gray got another set piece in the 78th minute just outside the box in the right corner.  Junior Chris Murray (Canton, MA) blasted a shot off the near post and it bounced right to sophomore Nate Peterson (Mashpee, MA), who sent home his first goal of the season at 77:30.  The Pride pushed forward in the waning moments but shots by Joe Labella (Wethersfield, CT) and Ryan Malone (Chicopee, MA) were off target.

Springfield opened the scoring at 38:52 after Connor Archambault (Torrance, CA) knocked home a deflected Malone shot to the lower right corner for his second goal of the season.  The game was evenly matched as both teams attempted nine shots while WPI enjoyed a 7-3 bulge in corner kicks.

WPI freshman goalie Connor Hoeckele (Granby, CT) made a pair of saves to improve his record to 8-2 on the year.  Springfield netminder Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, CT) was credited with four stops.

Both teams are  back in action next Saturday with home contests. WPI closes out a three-game homestand against Coast Guard at 11am while Springfield plays host to Babson at 1pm.
