Pair of First Half Goals by MIT Dooms Men's Soccer in Regular Season Finale

Worcester, MA --- Kareem Itani (Dallas, TX) scored the game-winning goal and added an assist to help visiting MIT clinch a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament with a 2-0 victory over WPI in the NEWMAC men's soccer regular season finale for both teams on Saturday night at Alumni Stadium.

MIT improves to 8-5-4 on the year and 3-4 in conference play.  Cambridge's Engineers earned the fifth and final spot in next week's NEWMAC Tournament by virtue of their win and Springfield only earning a tie in its match earlier in the day at Coast Guard.  MIT will play at Babson in quarterfinal contest on Wednesday afternoon.

WPI, the sixth-ranked team in the NSCAA Division III New England Coaches Poll and more importantly eighth in the latest NCAA Division III New England Regional Rankings, dip to 13-4 overall and 4-3 in league action.  The Crimson and Gray are the third seed in the NEWMAC Tournament and will face second-seeded Coast Guard Saturday at 1:30pm in a semifinal at top-seeded Wheaton.

Eric Crevoiserat (Glastonbury, CT) was inches away from denting the scoreboard with a blast from the top of the box in the 17th minute. Later in the stanza, MIT scored a pair of goals 6:34 apart. Itani sent the ball to the bottom left of the net following a feed from Sean Bingham (Garden City, NY) at 33:27 and Austin Freel (San Diego, CA) finished off a Itani's corner kick to complete the set. In the 68th minute, WPI netminder Jordan Finzel (Northport, NY) made a one-handed stop before smothering the ball after a shot by Freel.

Colin Hong (Honolulu, TX) posted the shutout in goal for MIT in his first action all season between the pipes.  The senior tallied two saves on the night.  Connor Hoeckele (Granby, CT) stopped a pair of shots in the first half while Finzel halted six in the final 45 minutes for the host Engineers.

MIT outshot WPI 16-5 and took 13 of the 14 corner kicks in the contest in a game what was played in driving rainstorm.

Connor Bolton (Warwick, RI), Crevoiserat, Shane Fagan (Middletown, RI), Tynan MacLeod (Groton, MA), Tom Meagher (Acton, MA), Tristan Richardson (Attleboro Falls, MA), Sam Russell (Glastonbury, CT) and Crevoiserat were honored before the game as part of "Senior Day."
