WORCESTER -- WPI defeated Becker 3-0 in the opening game of the Eighth Annual Worcester City Men's Soccer Tournament at Coughlin Stadium. The win lifts the Engineers record to 2-0 while the Hawks fall to 0-2.
Senior Kurt Naugler (Westford, MA) put the Engineers on the board with 28:42 remaining in the first half when he redirected a shot off the left post for his first goal of the season. Naugler put WPI in front 2-0 on a penalty kick with 17:34 left in the first half.
WPI secured the 3-0 victory in the 89th minute when Saahil Claypool (Acton, MA) shot an indirect kick into the top left corner of the Hawks net.
Jordan Finzel (Northport, NY) and Chris Xavier (Essex, MA) split the game in net for the Engineers, with neither goalie facing a shot . Becker goalkeeper Benjamin Cadman (Harvard, MA) kept the Hawks in the game with 12 saves.
The Worcester City Tournament continues on Sunday, September 6 at WPI. Becker will play Clark at noon, while the Engineers host Worcester State at 2:30pm.
