Lightning Strikes Twice as Men's Soccer Edges Framingham State 2-1

Ryan Tropeano

WORCESTER – Freshman Ryan Tropeano (Pembroke, MA) literally came off the bench to lift WPI past Framingham State, 2-1, in a non-conference men's soccer match on Wednesday night at Alumni Stadium.

Tropeano entered the pitch at 86:22 and proceeded to score his first collegiate goal on a header 26 seconds later. Earlier in the game, sophomore Pav Christidis (Fairport, NY) came on 2:40 before scoring his first collegiate goal at 37:10. Senior co-captain Chris Murray (Canton, MA) assisted on both Engineer goals.

Ram junior goalkeeper Josh Arno (Natick, MA) made a nifty save in the 51st minute on a header by sophomore Brendan Nemes (Kingston, MA). Five minutes later, senior Cory Cardeiro (Fall River, MA) converted a penalty kick to level the game at 1-1. Following the penalty kick, WPI took all 10 shots, including six on goal, the rest of the game.

Engineer sophomore Connor Hoeckele (Granby, CT) stopped one shot while Arno logged a game-best 11 saves. As a team, WPI held a 20-7 advantage in shots and were awarded 10 of the game's 11 corner kicks. The contest was delayed for 65 minutes due to lightning in the area.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday as WPI (4-0) takes on Union in the opening game of the CIAO Classic at MCLA. The contest is slated for a noon start. Framingham State (0-3), meanwhile, treks to Daniel Webster for a 1pm game.
