Springfield, MA --- Cam Powell (Housatonic, MA) headed home a pass early in the sixth minute as host Springfield tallied a key 1-0 NEWMAC victory over regionally-ranked WPI on Saturday.
The Pride ups their overall record to 10-2 and move into a second place tie with the Engineers with a 3-1 (9 points) conference mark while WPI, ranked fifth in the latest NSCAA NCAA Division III Top 10, slips to 9-4-1 on the year.
Powell's marker, his first of the season, came on the first shot of the contest. Luke Alvaro (Chicopee, MA) threw a ball into the box from the left sideline and Harrison Davis (Merrick, NY) headed the ball to Powell, who found the back of the net at the 5:13 mark.
The goal would stand up in the defensive-minded tilt as the hosts yielded just four shots on the day with only one on target. WPI had its opportunity in the remaining minute of the first half as sophomore Andy Rottier (Planville, CT) sent a through ball into the box to freshman Ben Nickerson (Presque Isle, Maine). Springfield netminder Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, CT) ran out toward Nickerson and made a slide tackle to keep the Engineer's scoreless.
That was the lone save for Schmid, who registered his third shutout of 2015. WPI goalkeeper Connor Hoeckele (Granby, CT) notched three stops in the loss, including a pair 38 seconds midway through the first half.
In addition to Nickerson's bid, Anthony Vigliotta (Beverly, MA), Chris Murray (Canton, MA) and Nate Peterson (Mashpee, MA) all recorded shots for the Crimson and Gray. Danny Murphy (Old Saybrook, CT) and Christian Schneider (Shelton, CT) each amassed three shots for the Pride, who attempted all five of the day's corner kicks.
Both teams are off until next Saturday when each hit the road for NEWMAC contests. WPI is Coast Guard at noon while Springfield ventures to Babson at 1pm.
