Framingham, MA --- WPI's Matt Farrell (Groveland, MA) provided the heroics as the Engineers defeated host Framingham State, 2-1, in double overtime Wednesday night at Maple Street Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-0 while the Rams slip to 1-2.
The game reached its conclusion when Farrell redirected Anthony Vigliotta's (Beverly, MA) corner kick past the Rams keeper. This is the third time in four meetings that Farrell has scored the game-winning goal against the Rams.
Ken Stahovish (Springfield, MA) got the Rams on the board in the 62nd with Simon Appiah (Worcester, MA) assisting. The visitors answered just a few moments later when Vigliotta evened it up after Liam Setterlund (Holden, MA) deflected a cross his way.
The Rams had an opportunity to win in the first overtime period when Stahovish sent a header just over the crossbar.
Junior Jordan Finzel (Northport, NY) made 2 saves in the win for the Engineers. Freshman Corey Davidge (Blackstone, MA) made 7 stops in the setback for the Rams.
The Engineers outshot the Rams 14-12 in the contest and were award ten corner kicks to the Rams one.
WPI returns to the pitch Saturday for an 11am eye-opener versus Mass. Maritime Academy at Alumni Stadium. The Rams host MIT in a non-conference match up at noon, also on Saturday.
