WORCESTER – Junior Connor Hoeckele (Granby, CT) collected a season-best four saves to earn his 11th career shutout, and second of the season, as WPI blanked visiting Mass. Maritime, 2-0, Saturday in a non-conference men's soccer contest played at Alumni Stadium.
With the win, the Engineers improve to 4-0 while the Buccaneers slip to 2-1.
Junior Brendan Nemes (Kingston, MA) netted his third goal of the season with a header off a cross from the left wing by classmate Reese Petersen (Springfield, NJ) in the 13th minute. Sophomore Spencer Ralphs (Simsbury, CT) later deposited a cross from freshman Matt Mulligan (Hebron, CT) to put the hosts ahead 2-0 in the 35th minute. Moments earlier, Mass. Maritime freshman Adam Crawford's (Kingston, MA) corner kick glanced off the keeper's hand and the left crossbar before the ensuing shot went wide.
Nemes paced all student-athletes with five shots followed by Ralphs with a trio. Sophomore Brendan Gawron (Braintree, MA) led the Buccaneers with three shots as Crawford and junior Kevin O'Leary (Norton, MA) were credited with a pair. Sophomore Connor Murphy (Mashpee, MA) and junior Mike Pruchnik (Rochester, MA) shared time in goal for the guests.
In all, the Engineers had a slight edge in shots (14-13) and shots on goal (5-4) while Mass. Maritime was awarded six of the eight corner kicks.
Both teams are back in action Wednesday as WPI hosts nationally-ranked Brandeis at 7pm and the Buccaneers travels to Nichols for a 4pm start.
