Babson Park, MA --- Sophomore Paul Beatty (Halifax, MA) scored twice in less than three minutes early in the second half to help visiting WPI defeat Babson College, 2-1, in NEWMAC men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

Babson, which suffered its first home loss of the year, drops to 3-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in league play, while WPI improves to 4-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the NEWMAC.

Sophomore Alex Crompton (Killington, VT) scored his fourth goal of the year for the Beavers. Senior Ian Cicalis (East Falmouth, MA) and sophomore Chris Czarnecki (Baltimore, MD) each added an assist.

Junior Spencer Ralphs (Simsbury, CT) recorded an assist for the Engineers.

The Green and White jumped on top in the fourth minute on Crompton's fourth goal of the season. Cicalis took a back pass from Czarnecki on the right flank and sent a long service into the box where Crompton rose above a defender and buried a header from just inside the penalty spot for a 1-0 advantage.

WPI outshot the Beavers 8-3 in the first half and pulled level on the first of Beatty's two goals in the 53rd minute. Beatty ran onto a thru ball from Ralphs just outside the box and took a touch before slotting a low shot past Babson senior goalkeeper James Takami (Kenmore, WA), who came charging off his line, to make it 1-1.

Beatty struck again just 2:27 later to put the Engineers in front with a 20-yard shot inside the right post for a 2-1 advantage. Babson's best chance to equalize came in the 85th minute when junior Jackson Greenspan (Meriden, NH) ran onto a long cross by senior Logan Ventura (Pittstown, NJ) only to be denied by WPI senior goalkeeper Connor Hoeckele (Granby, CT) in the 85th minute.

Takami finished with four saves for the Beavers, while Hoeckele made two of his three stops in the second half for the Engineers.

WPI held a 12-8 edge in shots and Babson finished with a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Beavers return to action next Saturday when they travel to Springfield at 3pm, while the Engineers host Framingham State on Tuesday at 7pm.
