Nemes Golden in Men’s Soccer’s OT Win Versus Coast Guard

Luke Reiniger

WORCESTER -- Senior Brendan Nemes (Kingston, MA) scored two goals, including the game-ender, in a 2-1 overtime triumph versus Coast Guard in a NEWMAC Men's Soccer matchup Saturday in Alumni Stadium.

With the win, WPI ups its record to 9-4 and 5-0 in league play, setting up a showdown with 5-0, and nationally-ranked, Springfield Saturday at 7pm. The result also means that WPI and Springfield are assured of at least a top two seed in next month's NEWMAC Tournament and if next Saturday's match provides a winner (no tie), that team will be the top seed. Coast Guard slips to 8-4-1 (3-2 NEWMAC).

Nemes delivered the game-winning goal with 56 seconds left in the first overtime as he scored from the top of the 18-yard box. After taking their first shot at 54:08, WPI took 10 of the 11 shots the rest of the way, including two in the extra frame. Earlier in the contest, Nemes tied the game in the 78th minute when he found the bottom left corner off a feed from sophomore Luke Reiniger (Rowley, MA).

Coast Guard senior Austin Read (Takoma Park, MD) finished off a corner kick taken by junior Patrick Palermo-Re (Manassas, VA) 6:29 into the matchup. As a team, the Bears took all six shots and were awarded both corner kicks in the first half.

Prior to Nemes' first goal, junior Spencer Ralphs (Simsbury, CT) looked to deliver the equalizer late in the 57th minute; however, his header bid went high. With 39 seconds left in regulation, sophomore Mark Calnan's (Winchester, MA) opportunity hit the post.

WPI senior goalkeeper Connor Hoeckele (Granby, CT) collected the only save of the game.

The Engineers entertain Fitchburg State Wednesday at 7pm while the Bears are at Mass. Maritime Tuesday for a 7pm match.
