Paul Beatty

New London, CT --- Paul Beatty (Halifax, MA) netted a goal and an assist as WPI men's soccer earned three valuable points by coming from behind and defeating host Coast Guard 2-1 in a key NEWMAC contest played Saturday in rainy conditions.

The Engineers, ranked sixth in the latest United Soccer Coaches New England Regional Top 10, are now 9-2-2 overall and 3-0-2 against conference foes.  WPI's 11 points keep them one behind NEWMAC frontrunner Springfield, who defeated Emerson 3-1 Saturday and is now 4-1 (12 points).  Babson also entered the day with eight points (2-0-2) and kick off at home versus Wheaton at 3pm.

Coast Guard opened the scoring midway through the first half when Daniel Taglianetti's (Wallingford, CT) service 30 yards out from the left side found the head of Taka Lendon (Peach Tree City, GA) for the sophomore's second goal of the year at 25:08.  Less than three minutes later Beatty evened the score when he blasted home a hard strike from the top of the box for his first marker of the season.

WPI took the lead for good at 36:44 as Beatty collected his own rebound and slid a cross to Matt Mulligan (Hebron, CT) who knocked home a one-timer into the back of the net for his second goal of 2018.

WPI goalkeeper Rufus Adams (Duxbury, MA) made three of his six saves in the final 10 minutes, denying a header from Robbie Fuget (Saint Marys, GA) at 80:44, a shot by Garrett Magill (Warrenton, VA) at 81:21 and a bid from Taglianetti at 84:47.  Coast Guard's Dakota Harich (New Market, MD) recorded four saves in net for the Bears.

Statistically the game was tight throughout with WPI owning a slight 10-9 edge in shots and both teams attempting six corner kicks.

Both teams step out of conference Tuesday.  WPI ventures to Elmira for a 3pm match in New York while Coast Guard entertains Mass Maritime at 7pm.
