Calnan Does It Again! – Men’s Soccer Edges UMass Boston in Overtime

WORCESTER – Mark Calnan (Winchester, MA) notched the game-ending goal at 93:16 to lift host WPI past UMass Boston, 1-0, in the first overtime of a men's soccer contest Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium.

With the victory, the Engineers up their record to 2-1 while the Beacons even out at 1-1-1.

Minutes after Jivan Purutyan's (Concord, MA) bid went high 37 seconds into the extra session, Calnan knocked home a feed from Luke Reiniger (Rowley, MA) to end the match.

Rufus Adams (Duxbury, MA) stopped three shots for WPI as his counterpart Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, RI) turned away six for UMass Boston.

Calnan finished with five shots, including two on-goal. Matt Mulligan (Hebron, CT) and Paul Beatty (Halifax, MA) each recorded three shots as Mulligan also took aim at the net twice.

Nilton de Andrade (Fogo, Cape Verde) took three of the Beacon's 10 shots while he and Rafael DeSouza (Watertown, MA) and Nick Fontana (Marshfield, MA) all registered a shot on-goal.

For the game, WPI outshot UMass Boston 21-10 and 7-3. The Engineers also had a slim margin in corner kicks (5-4).

The Crimson and Gray head to Brandeis for a 7pm match on Wednesday while the Beacons entertain Emerson Tuesday at 7pm.
