Thoroughbreds Edge Men’s Soccer by Razor Thin Margin

WPI Men's Soccer Day

WORCESTER -- The box score from Sunday afternoon's men's soccer game between WPI and Skidmore shows the teams nearly identical in almost all statistical categories. Unfortunately for the Engineers, the Thoroughbreds had a 1-0 edge in the only category that matters as the visitors handed WPI their second straight loss.

The difference was a goal in the 11th minute by Skidmore junior Rory Millar (Cambridge, MA). Millar took a thru ball from teammate Finn Webber (Andover, NH) and slotted to the opposite side of WPI keeper Roe Hendrick (Nashua, NH) for his first goal of the year.

Hendrick made three stops in his first start of the season, as did Skidmore keeper Bobby Stratts (Villanova, MA), who earned the shutout and improved to 3-1.

Saves were 3-3 in the game, while shots were 10-10. Fouls were nearly identical as well, though Skidmore had a 6-2 edge on corner kicks.

Before the game, WPI honored its five seniors including Pat Flaherty (Norwood, MA), Evan Hallberg (Glocester, RI), Christopher Martenson (Westport, CT), Erik Herrera (San Diego, CA) and Mike Biando (Atlanta, GA).

WPI is now 3-2-1 after starting the year with a three game win streak. The Engineers finish a six-game home stand on Tuesday night when they host Roger Williams at 7pm.  Skidmore (4-1) plays at Ramapo on Wednesday at 4 pm.
