Vaz and Previte Net Markers as Men's Soccer Claims First NEWMAC Triumph of Season

Anthony Previte - 2021 WPI Men's Soccer

WORCESTER -- A 2-0 victory over Springfield handed the WPI men's soccer team its first conference victory of the season while the squad picked up its fifth shutout of the year.

WPI improves to 6-3-1 overall and are now 1-2 in NEWMAC play while Springfield falls to 5-4 in 2021 and 1-2 in conference action.

The Engineers were led by Aaron Vaz (Medford, MA) and Anthony Previte (Andover, MA) in the outing. Vaz recorded his second goal of the year, and second of the game-winning variety, while Previte recorded his first career goal.

Springfield picked up its best chance of the first half with a shot by Thomas Sojka (Bellingham, MA) that was saved by WPI goalkeeper Roe Hendrick (Nashua, NH) as he punched up and tipped the shot over the bar 25 minutes into the game.

WPI replied by rapid firing a trio of shots at the Springfield goalkeeper Clayton Knibbs (Madison, CT) at the 30 minute mark, before they were able to connect with the back of the goal with just seconds remaining in the first half.

In the 45th minute of action, Vaz got the Engineers on the board. After a long goalie punt by Hendrick, Ryan Dalton challenged for the ball and dished to his right where Vaz took one dribble and shot into the right corner for the score.

WPI added to its total in the second half, making it a 2-0 game in the 59th minute. After a hard shot from the center of the box by Francesco Valagussa (Arlington, MA) that was blocked by a Springfield defender, Previte gobbled up the rebound and sent a pass across the goalkeeper and a couple of defenders into the lower left corner of the goal, netting his first goal of the season.

Both teams took 13 shots on the day with five of those coming on goal, but WPI was the only team to cross the end line. Hendrick finished with four saves, while WPI made one team save in the outing, while Knibbs made three saves on the day.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday night at 7 PM. The Engineers will play host to Johnson and Wales while Springfield returns home to host Endicott.
