Franco Bazzini - 2021 WPI Men's Soccer

WORCESTER -- It took until the 60th minute of action for either team to get on the board, but with the first, and lone, goal of the game, the WPI men's soccer team defeated Johnson and Wales Tuesday night, 1-0.

With the victory, the Engineers, who are ranked 7th in the United Soccer Coaches regional rankings, improve to 7-3-1 on the year while Johnson and Wales falls to 6-3 in 2021.

Franco Bazzini (San Juan, PR) was the game-changer for WPI, netting his fifth goal of the season and fourth of the game-winning variety. While Roe Hendrick (Nashua, NH) was a stalwart in goal for the Engineers, picking up his second shutout and third win of the season, making one save en route to the win.

After a long pass from midfield from one of his teammates, Bazzini was tripped in the box by the Wildcat goalkeeper setting up the penalty kick opportunity. Bazzini connected, beating Jacob Friedman (Woodland Hills, CA) to the top left of the goal to improve to 2-for-2 on the year in penalty kicks.

WPI outshot Johnson and Wales 11-5 on the evening, with seven of those shots coming on goal. The Wildcats were only able to manage one shot at Hendrick on the night. Friedman finished the night with six saves in the loss.

The Engineers are back on the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 9 when they head across town to Clark for a 2 PM showdown. Johnson and Wales return to the field on Friday night for a Homecoming game against Emmanuel at 7pm.
