Magalhaes Registers Goal as Men's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw with Nationally-Ranked Babson

2021 WPI Men's Soccer

Babson Park, MA --- No. 23 Babson and visiting WPI battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw in NEWMAC men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

The Beavers, who are unbeaten over their last four matches, are 7-3-3 overall and 3-0-2 in league play. WPI is also 7-3-3 overall and 1-2-2 in the NEWMAC.

Junior Jack Dugan (Haddonfield, NJ) scored his second goal of the season for the Beavers, who got seven saves from senior goalkeeper Itai Rubin (Briarcliff, NY). Sophomore Samuel Kalishman (Clarksville, MD) helped Babson earn a result by stopping a goal late in extra time.

Sophomore Michael Magalhaes (East Freetown, MA) had a goal and junior Franco Bazzini (San Juan, PR) recorded an assist for the Engineers. Fellow junior Roe Hendrick (Nashua, NH) finished with seven saves to improve to 3-1-2 on the year.

WPI outshot the hosts 8-1 over the opening 45 minutes, but the Green and White got on the board first thanks to Dugan's tally in the 51st minute. After receiving a pass from senior Mitchell Collins (Burlington, MA) on the right wing, he cut back inside and weaved through a pair of defenders before hammering a shot inside the near post.

The Engineers pulled even less than 10 minutes later though, as Bazzani's service into the box was headed down for Magalhaes, who blasted a volley inside the right post from 10 yards for his second marker of the year.

Rubin made his best save of the day less than 20 minutes into the match, diving to his right to snag Bazzani's bid to open the scoring from the top of the box. Hendrick was forced to dive to his left to get his hands on Babson senior Ross Shellow's (Miami, FL) blast in the 88th minute to send the game to overtime.

The best scoring chance in extra time came in the 103rd minute as sophomore  Giovanni Vecchiarino's (Hebron, CT) header off a Bazzani corner kick was cleared by Kalishman standing at the back post.

The Engineers finished with an 18-12 edge in shots, while both sides earned five corner kicks.

Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Eastern Connecticut State at 3:30 p.m., while WPI travels to No. 12/8 Amherst on Wednesday at 7pm.
