Men's Soccer Drops 1-0 Matchup of Regionally-Ranked Squads at Amherst

Amherst, MA --- In the battle of two NCAA regionally ranked teams, a first-half goal from Amherst was the difference maker in a 1-0 WPI men's soccer loss on Wednesday night. 

German Giammattei (Pinecrest, FL) netted the game-winner in the 40th minute of play for the Mammoths who improved to 10-2-1 in 2021 with the win. WPI fell to 7-4-3 on the year in the team's penultimate non-conference game of the season. 

WPI finished with nine shots on the day, four of which came on goal, while Amherst finished with 11 shot opportunities, also four on goal. 

Roe Hendrick (Nashua, NH) saw all 90 minute of action in goal for the Engineers allowing the one goal and making three saves while Kofi Hope-Gund (New York, NY) was able to save all four shots coming at him during the game, including a pair of second-half attempts by WPI. 

Giammattei's goal was his team-leading seventh of the season. 

The initial NCAA regional rankings were released today, Wednesday Oct. 20 and both squads appeared on the list.  Amherst appears on the Region I rankings while WPI is a part of the Region II rankings. The first round of regional rankings are listed alphabetically. 

WPI will return home for one final time during the regular season when they play host to Emerson at 4pm at Alumni Stadium. Amherst returns to action Saturday at 1pm against Colby at home.
