WORCESTER -- Aaron Vaz (Medford, MA) registered a goal for WPI in the 12th minute as the host Engineers and city rival Worcester State played to a 1-1 tie as the two teams opened the 2022 campaign Thursday evening on H.Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.
The Lancers opened the scoring in the seventh minute as their offensive efforts were rewarded when a ball deflected off a pair of Crimson and Gray players and into the net at 6:33. WPI answered back just over five minutes later when Vaz knocked a cross from Mike Biando (Atlanta, GA) into the left side of the goal for his third-career marker at 11:52.
After the early scoring flurry, the majority of the game featured occasional scoring chances, but things heated up in the final minutes. Vaz and Luke Savoie (Mansfield, MA) registered shots 23 seconds apart in the 84th minute for WPI and Ethan Escobar (Paxton, MA) had a pair of bids in the last three minutes.
Dylan Ruberti (Westboro, MA) had an outstanding performance in net for the Lancers. The junior equaled his career high with seven stops. Roe Hendrick (Nashua, NH) notched five saves for WPI, which was aided by a team save from Evan Hallberg (Glocester, RI).
WPI enjoyed a healthy 22-9 edge in shots on the night and attempted the match's corner kick. WPI's Francesco Valagussa (Arlington, MA) paced all players with eight shots, including five on target and Escobar and Luke-Mark Anu (Salem, MA) each registered multiple shots for the guests.
The Engineers kickoff a six-game road trip with a 3pm match at Skidmore on Saturday. Worcester State opens its home schedule with a 2:30pm contest against Rhode Island College.
