Providence, RI --- Johnson & Wales' Austin Sweeney (Nutley, NJ) recorded the only goal of the match with just 8:54 remaining as the host Wildcats blanked WPI in a non-conference men's soccer match-up played on Sunday afternoon.
JWU is now 3-1-1 while the Engineers suffered their first setback of 2022 and now sit at 2-1-2 on the season.
Early in the 82nd minute, Conner Elliott (Mansfield, MA) pushed a pass through the Crimson and Gray defense. Sweeney, who shot into the left side of the net for senior's first goal of 2022 and fourth of his career. WPI had one final attempt at tying the game with just under two minutes left but a header by Aaron Vaz (Medford, MA) sailed wide.
The guests arguably had the best scoring chance early, with a corner kick at 1:47 followed by shot by Matthew Biando (Duluth, GA) that was blocked.
Statistically, the game was about as close as it could have been with both teams attempting eight shots and the Wildcats holding a slight 4-3 edge in corners. Luke Savoie (Mansfield, MA) accounted for two of WPI's shots, with one on goal, while Elliott was the only other player from either team with multiple shots.
Senior Jacob Friedman (Woodland Hills, CA) made four stops for JWU on his way to his third clean sheet of the season and 11th of his career. Junior Ryan Martin (Douglas, MA) was credited with four saves in this 2022 debut for the Engineers.
After a busy stretch of three games in five days, the Engineers will now be off until Saturday, when they open up NEWMAC play by traveling to Coast Guard for a 1pm start.
