Cape Coral, FL --- WPI Softball opened up its 2010 campaign at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in southwest Florida on Sunday.  In its first action of the year, WPI topped Wheelock 11-0 in the season opener before posting a 4-2 victory over Olivet later in the day. With the wins, the Engineers have begun their season 2-0 for the second consecutive year.

Against Olivet, the Engineers spotted the Comets a 1-0 lead and were held scoreless for four innings before they were helped to four runs in the top of the fifth. With one out in the inning, six Engineers in a row reached base as WPI grabbed hold of the lead. First baseman Chelsea Fogarty (Mystic, CT) walked and catcher Erin Beaulieu (Bethany, CT) reached on an error to begin the threat, while a walk to shortstop Allie Roche (Chelmsford, MA) loaded the bases. Amanda Martori (Haverhill, MA) also reached on an error, allowing two runs to score as WPI jumped out in front, 2-1. Following a bunt base hit off the bat of Autumn Silke (Dixment, ME) that loaded the bases once again, Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME) smacked a base hit to center that scored another run, with Silke scoring on Olivet's third error of the inning to make it 4-1.

Olivet added a run in its half of the fifth off WPI starter Erin Flaherty (Stoughton, MA) to pull to within 4-2, but they could get no closer. Flaherty (1-0) tossed six innings in her first action of 2010, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks. The sophomore also contributed WPI's only extra-base hit, a lined double in the left-center field gap in the sixth. Allie Hardy (West Townsend, MA) struck out two in a 1-2-3 seventh for her first save of 2010.

Hardy picked up a complete game 11-0 win over Wheelock in the season opener, marking the first time the sophomore has recorded a win and a save in the same day. Hardy (1-0) was dominant in five innings of work, allowing only two hits while striking out eight and walking one en route to the win.

Hardy would receive plenty of run support from her teammates, as the Engineers established an early lead and used an eight-run fifth inning to put the game away. Johnson started the WPI offense with a first-inning double and later scored on a Katrina Boynton (Ballston Lake, NY) groundout. Katherine Fitton (Lebanon, CT) added an RBI double for a 2-0 Engineer lead after an inning of play. The Crimson and Gray tacked on a run in the third as Meg Foley (Belchertown, MA) singled, stole second and came around with WPI's third run on a Fitton RBI base hit.

Leading 3-0, WPI batted around in the fifth. Fitton, Johnson and Foley each had RBI doubles in the frame, but the key blow came off the bat of Roche. The sophomore's three-run blast broke the inning wide open and powered WPI to the 11-0 triumph. Roche and Fitton each had three hits and three RBI in the opener, while Foley and Johnson each contributed two hits and a run driven in for the Engineers.

WPI Softball returns to action on Monday when they travel to nearby Fort Myers for games against St. Mary's (IN) and Drew (NJ).
