Cape Coral, FL --- WPI Softball picked up a pair of victories on Tuesday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in southwest Florida, defeating Elms 8-5 in the opener before besting Bethany Lutheran 10-1 in the late game. WPI now stands at 5-1 on the season and have held leads in all six games thus far on its spring trip to Florida.

WPI featured a balanced attack to defeat Elms, as six Engineers recorded multi-hit games en route to the win. WPI dented the scoreboard in the second inning on an Amanda Martori (Haverhill, MA) RBI single to take a 1-0 lead before three Engineers crossed the plate in the third. The Engineers used an Allie Roche (Chelmsford, MA) RBI base hit and a run-scoring hit from Meg Foley (Belchertown, MA) sandwiched around an unearned run to jump out in front by a 4-0 score.

After Elms plated a run in the fourth, WPI responded with three more runs in its half of the inning. A one-out home run from Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME) made the score 5-1, while an RBI triple from Chelsea Fogarty (Mystic, CT) and a run-scoring single from Courtney Rosales (Ipswich, MA) gave the Engineers a commanding 7-1 lead.

Elms used a four run fifth to get back into the game at 7-5, but they could get no closer. The Engineers pushed across a run in the sixth on Roche's second RBI base hit of the game for the final tally. Christa Coscia (Lakeville, MA) won her second game in as many days for WPI, tossing five innings and allowing two earned runs. Erin Saari (Brookline, NH) had a 3-for-4 day to pace WPI, while Roche, Fogarty, Rosales, Johnson and Erin Beaulieu (Bethany, CT) each had two hits apiece.

In the late game, Foley had a 3-for-3 game with three RBI to lead the Engineers to a 10-1 victory over Bethany Lutheran. The Engineers scored eight times over the first three innings to seize control of the game. After plating an unearned run in the first, WPI used a two-RBI single from Martori and an Emily Hartzell (Brunswick, ME) run-scoring hit to take hold of a 4-0 lead after two. WPI would add four more in the third, keyed by a Foley RBI base knock and a sac fly off the bat of Kaylyn Button (Ontario, NY). Foley would add two more RBI in the fifth to put the finishing touches on a 10-1 win.

Katherine Fitton (Lebanon, CT), who earned the save in the opener, went the distance in the circle in game two for WPI to pick up her first collegiate win.  Fitton (1-0) pitched five innings allowing a run on four hits while recording six strikeouts. Johnson provided two hits, while Autumn Silke (Dixment, ME) put together a 3-for-4 game at the plate and scored four runs to lead the Crimson and Gray.

After a day off, WPI Softball will return to the field on Thursday for games against Fredonia State and St. Joseph's (ME). Action is slated to begin at 11am.
