Cape Coral, FL -- For the fourth straight time in the tournament, WPI split a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Classic, getting shutout by Bridgewater State 3-0 before rebounding to beat Newbury 7-3 at the Cape Coral Sports Complex on Thursday.
Sophomore Ali LaRue (South Glen Falls, NY) reached base three times, scored twice, and drove in two while sophomore Lauren DiFelice (Acushnet, MA) went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Engineer offense to a 7-3 victory over Newbury in game two.
WPI (4-4) struck for three runs in the bottom of the second, highlighted by LaRue's two-run single and a RBI single by senior Allie Roche (Chelmsford, MA). After Newbury made it 3-2 in the third inning, junior Juliana Fekete (Belgrade, ME) hit a sacrifice fly that scored freshman Chiana Montesi (Columbia, CT) and fellow classmate Katie Bumila (Raynham, MA) followed with a RBI double to put the Engineers up, 5-2.
The NightHawks (0-7) got a single run back in the fifth before WPI got a pair of run-producing groundouts by Fekete and sophomore Nicole McDonough (Abington, MA) in the sixth to account for the final score.
Junior Christa Coscia (Lakeville, MA) picked up her third win of the season, throwing five innings, striking out four while allowing four hits and two earned runs. Senior Erin Flaherty (Stoughton, MA) recorded her first save of the season and the fourth of her career with two hitless innings.
Senior Allie Hardy (West Townsend, MA) was saddled with the loss for the Crimson and Grey while Flaherty struck out seven and gave up just two hits in five innings of relief. Freshman Amanda Pierce (Ware, MA) also had a hit in the defeat.
