Cape Coral, FL --- The WPI Softball team wrapped up its 2012 Spring Break trip to Fort Myers/Cape Coral, Florida with a pair of victories on Friday afternoon at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.
Allie Roche (Chelmsford, MA), Erin Beaulieu (Bethany, CT), and Amanda Pierce (Ware, MA) all recorded multiple-hit performances as part of a ten hit attack to help propel WPI to a 6-3 game one victory over Northland (WI). Roche got the scoring started in the second inning when she roped a RBI single to center before freshman Chiana Montesi (Columbia, CT) followed with a RBI double for an early 2-0 lead.
After the LumberJills (1-6) got a run back in the third, WPI countered with two more runs in the bottom half on a throwing error by Northland and a run-producing single by Pierce to make it 4-1 Engineers. Sophomore Nicole McDonough (Abington, MA) hit her third home run of the season to left center in the fourth inning while Roche registered her second RBI in the game with a single in the fifth. Northland would get two runs in their half of the fifth on a RBI double and a bases loaded walk.
Senior Erin Flaherty (Stoughton, MA) allowed two earned runs and struck out five to even her record to 1-1.
Senior Allie Hardy (West Townsend, MA) threw a complete-game three hit shutout with nine strikeouts and freshman Katie Bumila (Raynham, MA) went 3-for-3 with five RBI and three runs scored as WPI beat MCLA, 15-0, to finish its Gene Cusic Classic schedule.
The Crimson and Grey would get runs in all four innings, including seven in the third inning. McDonough scored a team-high four times in going 1-for-2 with a RBI while sophomore Ali LaRue (South Glen Falls, NY) went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Beaulieu, who reached base all four plate appearances despite not being credited with a time at-bat, and junior Juliana Fekete (Belgrade, ME) each scored twice.
Roche (three), sophomore Lauren DiFelice (Acushnet, MA) (two), Beaulieu (one), Pierce (one), and junior Janelle MacLaughlin (Lancaster, MA) (one) all recorded RBIs in the victory. Hardy, who allowed just one walk, improved to 2-3 on the season.
The Engineers conclude their trip 6-4 and return to action on Tuesday, March 20th with a doubleheader at Fitchburg State.
