Worcester, MA --- Senior Allie Roche (Chelmsford, MA) went 2-for-5 with five RBI and a pair of doubles to lead host WPI to a sweep of Coast Guard in NEWMAC softball action on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson and Grey improves to 14-8 on the season and 5-1 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 14-9 and 2-4.
WPI snaps a nine-game losing streak to Coast Guard and notches its first sweep over the Bears since 2007.
Coast Guard junior Holli Bastinick (Wayne, NJ) got the Bears on the board in the first inning with a RBI double before WPI responded with two runs in the second. Roche knocked home LaRue with a bases loaded groundout and freshman Katie Bumila (Raynham, MA) followed with a RBI sacrifice fly.
The visitors would tie the score at two in the third inning on junior Stacia Sarwinski's (Grove, OK) RBI double but the home standing Engineers would get three in the bottom half to retake the lead for good. LaRue, freshman Amanda Pierce (Ware, MA), and Roche all hit run-producing doubles in the inning.
WPI junior starter Christa Coscia (Lakeville, MA) got the win in the circle, allowing just one earned run and four hits with a strikeout in four innings. Senior Allie Hardy (West Townsend, MA) got the save after pitching the final three without giving up a run. Bear starter Catherine Walker (Dearborn Heights, MI) took the complete game loss.
Roche's bases loaded two out three-run double in the fourth inning helped seal the game two 4-2 win for the Crimson and Grey. After Coast Guard got an unearned run in the first, WPI countered with a RBI single off the bat of sophomore Lauren DiFelice (Acushnet, MA). The Bears got another run in the sixth when sophomore Kaitlin Ward (Saline, MI) singled home freshman Jesse Richardson (Kent, WA).
Senior Erin Flaherty (Stoughton, MA) improved to 6-1 on the season with a complete game, allowing just five hits and an earned run with a walk and three strikeouts. Walker recorded the loss for Coast Guard.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday, April 4th. WPI will travel to Leicester, MA for a 3pm doubleheader with Becker while Coast Guard will host Wesleyan at 4pm.
