Softball Cruises Past Smith on Senior Day as

Christa Coscia
Worcester, MA --- Senior Christa Coscia (Lakeville, MA) delivered a three-hitter in the second game of a double header Friday afternoon as WPI swept Smith College 4-3 and 2-1 in NEWMAC action.

WPI enjoyed senior day at Marois Field on the campus of Assumption as they improved to 11-21 and 5-9 in conference and provided head coach George LeGacy his 100th career victory in the opener. Smith drops to 8-21 overall and 0-14 in the NEWMAC.

Coscia threw five hitless innings and tossed for all seven, striking out two.  She improves to 6-10 from the mound.  Smith's Tori Brown (New Market, MD) pitched for the entire second game giving up eight hits and two earned runs while taking the loss in game two.

Lauren DiFelice
(Acushnet, MA) posted a single that drove in the first run in the opening frame of game two.  DiFelice earned three hits on the day.  Singles from Juliana Fekete (Belgrade, ME) and Jacquelyne DiTroia (Andover, MA) in the third inning gave WPI the 2-0 go-ahead.

In their final attempt to overtake WPI, Joanna Giordano (South Salem, NY) hit a sacrifice bunt with one out and two runners in scoring position.  She drove in teammate Brittany Purington (Weare, NH) to bring Smith to within one.  Coscia squelched the Pioneers' charge as she calmly threw Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, CT) out at first to end the game.

The Engineers started off strong in game one with three runs in the first inning off two hits.  A series of walks and two Pioneer errors plated Nicole McDonough (Abington, MA).  Amanda Pierce's (Ware, MA) single through the left side sent DiTroia home and a single by Ali LaRue (South Glens Falls, NY) scored another run for WPI making it 3-1 at the end of the first inning.

Smith tied the game in the top of the fourth when Purington reached base on a walk and proceeded to steal second and score for the Pioneers after a wild pitch.  Giordano singled to the pitcher and drove home the tying run, making it 3-3.

A McDonough single put her in scoring position and Fekete hit the single that sent her teammate home for the winning run.  McDonough scored two runs on three at bats and recorded one hit in game one.  LaRue led the Crimson and Gray with four hits, one RBI and two stolen bases on the day.

Clare Doolin
(Newton, MA) pitched all seven innings for the win, tallying three strikeouts and allowing three runs on three hits.  She improves to 5-11 on the year.  Gina Martucci (Pompton Plains, NJ) shouldered the loss allowing seven hits but only one earned run.

WPI's doubleheader against MIT originally scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed.  A new date will be determined at a later date.  Smith is scheduled to play at Babson tomorrow in a double-header beginning at noon.
