Softball Secures Sweep to End Spring Break with 8-2 Ledger

Clermont, FL --- Ama Biney (Worcester, MA), Kristin Gallagher (Coventry, RI) and RiAnna May (Westminster, CO) recorded multiple hits in both ends of a doubleheader sweep of Thiel and New England College on Friday at the NTC Spring Games. The Engineers defeated the Tomcats 5-2 before taking down the Pilgrims 13-5 in five innings.

WPI (8-2) dented the scoreboard four times in the opening frame against Thiel (5-4). Gallagher, Hope Shevchuk (Burlington, CT) and May all recorded RBI singles while Katie Bumila (Raynham, MA) scampered home on a miscue.

Thiel grabbed one back in the third and again in the fifth. Biney (2-for-3, RBI, walk, run) tripled in a run in the sixth for the 5-2 final.

May and Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA) went 2-for-3 while Gallagher went 2-for-4 for the Engineers. Clare Doolin (Newton, MA), meanwhile, improved to 5-0 with six strikeouts in the five-hit complete game effort.

WPI and New England College (5-4) had matching 5-run innings in the bottom of the second and top of the third. Julia Veitch (Carlisle, MA) and Gallagher (2-for-4, RBI 2 runs) used RBI doubles and Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) added a run-producing triple to go along with May's (2-for-3, 3 RBI, run) RBI single and a run scoring on a miscue.

The Crimson and Gray opened the game wide open with an eight-run fourth. Shevchuk, May and Kelsey Saucier (Worcester, MA) went used consecutive at-bats to drive in five with a double, triple and single, respectively. Later in the frame, Biney (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 3 runs) plated two with a triple and Murphy-Cook (3-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 runs) added another with an RBI single.

Veitch finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. In all, the Engineers logged seven extra base hits in the Florida finale.

Caroline Medino (Pompton Lakes, NJ) worked the first three frames before yielding to Saucier who picked up the win. The duo combined to strike out seven.

The Engineers are slated to welcome Fitchburg State for a 3pm New England opener on Tuesday.
