Softball Returns to Winning Ways With Pair of Shutouts at Babson

Babson Park, MA --- First-year Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) had a pair of three-hit games to go along with three runs scored and four stolen bases to help visiting WPI sweep Babson in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Engineers took the opener 3-0, and then won game two 6-0.

Regionally-ranked WPI, which has now won 13 of its last 15 games, is 23-7 overall and 11-5 in conference play. The Beavers, which claimed a spot in the upcoming conference tournament, drop to 18-15 overall and 9-9 in the NEWMAC.

After leaving a runner on third in the first, the Engineers jumped on top 1-0 in the second. First-year RiAnna May (Westminster, CO) led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Hope Shevchuk (Burlington, CT) before coming in to score on an RBI single by sophomore Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA) for a 1-0 lead.

WPI added to its lead in the fifth as Murphy-Cook singled to right and scored on first-year Ama Biney's (Worcester, MA) triple to right center. Sophomore Kristin Gallagher (Coventry, RI) then delivered Biney with a sacrifice fly to center for a 3-0 advantage.

The three-run lead was more than enough for Engineers' junior Clare Doolin (Newton, MA), who tossed a one-hitter and allowed just three base runners in a complete-game effort. She retired 14 of the first 15 hitters she faced before her no-hit bid was broken up on a base hit by junior Emily Morris (Wolcott, CT) with two outs in the fifth.

Beavers' sophomore Catherine Pitts (Winchester, MA) walked to lead off the sixth, but was stranded after Doolin recorded back-to-back strikeouts, followed by an inning-ending ground out to shortstop.

Murphy-Cook went 3-for-4, while Gurska finished with two two hits and an RBI for WPI.

Senior Meghan Hayes (Robbinsville, NJ) took the loss for the Green and White after allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out four in a complete-game effort.

The Engineers scored single runs in each of the first two innings of game two as senior Katie Bumila (Raynham, MA) drove in Murphy-Cook with one out in the first, and senior Chiana Montesi (Columbia, CT), who came on as a pinch runner, scored on Biney's fielder's choice to make it 2-0 in the second.

WPI stretched its lead to 3-0 in the fifth as Biney scored on a two-out single through the right side by Bumila. Sophomore Lauren DeStephano (Charlton, MA) and first-year Samantha Smith (Hillsborough, NJ) both walked in the bottom of frame and moved into scoring position on a bunt by sophomore Celeste Hynes (Matawan, NJ), but Engineers' first-year Casey Arpin (Uxbridge, MA) used a pop up and a strikeout to escape the jam.

The Beavers threatened again in the sixth as junior Caitie Benoit (Williamstown, MA) doubled to right center and sophomore Meaghan Merullo (Winchester, MA) reached on an error with two outs. Arpin again worked out of danger as Bumila made a sliding catch of a foul pop behind first base to end the inning.

WPI put the game away with three runs in the seventh, two of which came with two outs. Biney plated Murphy-Cook with an RBI double, Bumila followed with an RBI single to right and then scored on an error to make it 6-0.

Sophomore Caroline Medino (Pompton Lakes, NJ) struck out six over the first four innings, while Arpin allowed just two hits while striking out three over the final three frames to collect her third save. Murphy-Cook went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Bumila finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored for the Engineers.

First-year Ali Reilly (New Canaan, CT) took the loss for the Green and White after allowing three earned runs on 10 hits over seven innings. Benoit, Morris and junior Madison Dinaso (Ardsley, NY), who had reached base in 30 straight games prior to being held off the bases in game one, all had a hit.

WPI wraps up conference play with a doubleheader at Smith on Monday at 3pm while Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Bridgewater State for a doubleheader starting at 3pm.
