Kissimmee, FL --- The WPI softball team absorbed a pair of setbacks Tuesday at the Sunkisssed Games. The Engineers were defeated by Heidelberg (OH), 10-4, and later Meredith (NC), 14-4, in five innings.

WPI (3-3) was led by senior RiAnna May (Westminster, CO) who went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBI on the opener. Freshman Marissa Gonzales (Oakley, CA) and sophomore Cassie Graca (Somerset, MA) each batted 2-for-4 and stole a base. Junior Renee LeClaire (Merrimack, NH) added a double. Senior Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) stole a pair of bases to go with one by sophomore Leila Camplese (Tewksbury, MA). Senior Kelsey Saucier (Worcester, MA) and freshman Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) shared pitching duties.

Heidelberg plated one in the second and another in the top of the fourth. WPI took the lead in the home half as senior Julia Veitch (Carlisle, MA) connected on an RBI single and May followed with a 2-RBI double.

The Ohio-based team neutralized the Engineers effort with three in the fifth before adding five more in the sixth. WPI scratched together an unearned run that included Camplese, who was running for Veitch, stealing home.

Meredith claimed an early 1-0 lead. WPI forged ahead behind a two-run blast by LeClaire and a bases loaded walk issued to senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA). The Avenging Angels evened the game at 3-3 with a pair in the bottom of the second and reclaimed the lead with an unearned run in the third. LeClaire benefitted from a bases-loaded free pass for the final tie of the game.

The Avenging Angels pulled away with five in the fourth and five in the fifth to end the game early.

Murphy-Cook (stolen base), Gonzales and LeClaire (3 RBI) accounted for all three of WPI's hits in the contest. Freshman Nicole Kuberka (Los Angeles, CA) was denied her third win in as many days while freshman Kaitlyn Hess (Milford, NH) also pitched in the game for the Crimson and Gray.

The Boynton Hillers return to action Thursday versus Westminster (PA) at 9am before taking on Bluffton (OH) at 11:15am.
